I do sometimes forget that people are not as acquainted with the geography of England as I am, and, finding it difficult to purloin a map with the right places marked on it, I made my own. It’s rough and I’m sure I will do it over later but for now it should give you an idea of what I’m wittering on about.
I also plan to do mini-maps at a larger scale which will allow me to add a bit more detail.
But for now, here is a list of posts which mention certain places and churches on the map:
Winchester - Medieval Shrines, St Swithun
Canterbury - Medieval Shrines, Burying or Unburying the Dead
York - The Apocalypse, Anchorites in the Medieval Church
Chester - The Naughty Hermit of Chester
Corbridge (very near Hexham) - Awe and Wonder
Escomb (near Durham) - Awe and Wonder
Durham - First Reflections
Chester-le-Street - Anchorites in the Medieval Church
Skipton (not on the map yet) - Anchorites in the Medieval Church
Lindisfarne - Burying or Unburying the Dead, St Aidan of Lindisfarne Part 1, St Aidan of Lindisfarne Part 2
Wearmouth - Burying or Unburying the Dead
Ovingham (near Hexham) - Burying or Unburying the Dead
Wirksworth (not on the map yet) - Burying or Unburying the Dead
Hythe (not on the map yet) - Burying or Unburying the Dead
Bamburgh - St Aidan of Lindisfarne Part 1, St Aidan of Lindisfarne Part 2
Heysham (not on the map yet) - St Aidan of Lindisfarne Part 1
Hexham - An Exploration of Hexham Abbey Part 1, An Exploration of Hexham Abbey Part 2, An Exploration of Hexham Abbey Part 3
East Yorkshire 25th August - 1st September
Here is a map of the trip.
Selby - The Jesse Window
Mount Grace - Mount Grace
A hop over to the Isle of Wight might be considered... two working Benedictine Abbeys... the remarkable all brick Quarr Abbey and the hidden St Cecilia's Abbey where cloistered Benedictine nuns sing in Latin with the angels... something very special going on there...
This is so helpful! Thank you for helping guys like me out. I didn't grow up talking about or visiting any of these places, so this map is just what I need. The best I had before is maps like "Medieval England" or "England as William the Conqueror Found It." These tend to be loaded with details of events that took place over a thousand years or more. Too much forest to see any particular trees.
