Canterbury Cathedral is full of wondrous things; it was the centre of the Catholic church in England for many centuries after St Augustine, and remains the principal church of the Church of England. I visited it in a hot day in July 2022 when I unfortunately didn’t have as much time as I would have liked as the Church of England conference of bishops from around the world was beginning that day and the Cathedral was closing early.

The church was the centre of the cult of St Thomas Becket, which I’m not going to cover here as I’m planning to do that next month on his feast day, though we will see some of the stained glass associated with him. In this photo you can see the end of the nave and the steps leading up to the monks’ choir and it’s what’s underneath here that I’m going to show you today.
