As yesterday was St George’s day, the patron Saint of England, I thought that I should start with him today. This is a fabulous 15th century painting of St George slaying the dragon, in all his medieval splendour, from the church in Pickering, probably made around 1470. The paintings have been recoloured but are otherwise as originally depicted.
Why a dragon? Thereby hangs a tale, and it’s worth reflecting on this and how medieval people may have experienced painted images. So in this post we’ll look at the paintings at Pickering and the stories of a couple of the saints they depict.
